As allegations of sexual abuse continue to build up at the largest housing provider for unaccompanied migrant children in the U.S., officials have failed to provide adequate oversight, according to advocates.
A lawsuit filed by the Justice Department accuses employees of Southwest Key Programs Inc. of sexually abusing and harassing children in their care for at least eight years. Despite these allegations, the nonprofit organization has received billions of dollars in government contracts and continues to house thousands of unaccompanied migrant children entering the U.S.
Southwest Key operates 29 child migrant shelters, with room for more than 6,300 children across Texas, Arizona, and California. The lack of oversight and accountability in the system has raised concerns among critics.
