World Golf Hall of Famer Juan “Chi Chi” Rodriguez has passed away at the age of 88, as announced by the PGA Tour on Thursday.
No specific cause of death was provided at this time.
Rodriguez, hailing from Puerto Rico, made his debut on the PGA Tour in 1960. Over his impressive 21-year career, he secured eight victories on the Tour and added an additional 22 senior tour titles to his name.
Notably, Rodriguez was a key member of the triumphant 1973 US Ryder Cup team.
In recognition of his achievements, Rodriguez was inducted into the PGA World Golf Hall of Fame in 1992.
The PGA Tour described Rodriguez as a “showman on the course, a tireless philanthropist off the course.”
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan paid tribute, stating, “Chi Chi Rodriguez’s passion for charity and outreach was surpassed only by his incredible talent with a golf club in his hand. A vibrant, colorful personality both on and off the golf course, he will be dearly missed by the PGA Tour and all those whose lives he impacted. Our deepest condolences go out to the entire Rodriguez family during this challenging time.”
