In a heartwarming display of resilience and community spirit, hundreds of children battling cancer and serious blood disorders, alongside survivors and families honoring their loved ones, gathered for the annual Champions Run for Life “Torch Run.” This inspiring event not only celebrated hope but also raised crucial funds for expanded treatment programs and research at the Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Institute at MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital in Long Beach.
Participants proudly carried an Olympic-style torch, a powerful symbol of hope for a cure, in an unforgettable relay around Long Beach’s iconic Lion’s Lighthouse for Sight at the Shoreline Aquatic Park. The atmosphere was electric, filled with sponsors, community supporters, and volunteers united in their commitment to combat childhood cancer.
Among the participants was Hector, a 12-year-old who is six years cancer-free from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. His presence at the event served as a beacon of hope for others. “Our patients continue to inspire us every day,” said Dr. Jacqueline Casillas, medical director at the institute. “Champions Run for Life is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of our community.”
Each runner brought their own story of triumph, whether it was a former patient celebrating seven years of remission or a current patient marking the completion of their first year of treatment. The event featured colorful banners and posters, showcasing the spirit of support and strength.
Post-event, families and friends enjoyed a delightful picnic and carnival by the ocean. Attendees participated in signing Ribbons of Hope cards—special messages of encouragement that will be distributed to patients at the Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Institute during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September.
The Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Institute is dedicated to providing compassionate care for children with cancer, sickle cell disease, and other serious blood disorders. The funds raised from the Champions Run for Life will support various psychosocial programs, including a School Integration Program and Art Therapy, ensuring that patients and families can navigate the challenges of childhood cancer.
MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach stands out as one of the few free-standing children’s hospitals in California. It uniquely offers specialized maternity and pediatric care under one roof, catering to the diverse needs of families.
