In a world often clouded by challenges, a retired nurse and her golden retriever are changing lives one wagging tail at a time. Martha Baumgardner, a member of Paws for Love, combines her nursing experience with the affectionate presence of Rocco, her loyal canine companion. Together, they bring joy and comfort to those who need it most.
Martha describes Rocco as not just a pet, but a dedicated partner in her mission to spread happiness. At 11 years old, Rocco has spent nine years serving as a therapy dog, brightening the lives of patients at Providence Hospital. Martha shares, "He’s a happy doggy. He loves people. He loves the kiddos."
Every visit to the hospital is an opportunity for Rocco to work his magic. Patients often express their gratitude, with one stating, "You make me feel so happy. The best therapy ever." It's this connection that drives Martha to continue her mission, combining her nursing skills with Rocco's therapy work.
In recognition of their unwavering dedication to spreading positivity, Martha was honored as this month's ABC-7 Do-Gooder. She received a $1,000 check to donate to a charity of her choice, which she plans to give to her furry friends at Paws-itive Rescue. "I think everybody... we need special... special attention. We need to be friendly, and smile with the people," she emphasizes.
Martha’s story is a reminder of the impact one person can have on a community, uplifted by the love of a pet. If you know someone who makes a difference, you can nominate them for the ABC-7 Do-Gooder award. Just follow the link to the submission form.
