Fayetteville, North Carolina 

Fayetteville is a city and the county seat of Cumberland County, North Carolina, in the United States. In the northwest of the city, it is best known as the location of Fort Bragg, a significant American Army base. 

The National Civic League has given Fayetteville the All-America City Award three times. It is the sixth-largest city in North Carolina with 208,501 people according to the 2020 census. On the Cape Fear River, in the Sandhills of the western Coastal Plain, is the city of Fayetteville. 

The Fayetteville metropolitan area is the largest in southeast North Carolina and the fifth largest in the state with a population of 529,252 in 2020. Fort Bragg, Hope Mills, Spring Lake, Raeford, Pope Field, Rockfish, Stedman, and Eastover are some of the metro Fayetteville's suburbs. 

 

Geography 

The Hoke boundary is west of the city limits. The community of Spring Lake encircles it on its northern side. 

Fayetteville has a total area of 147.7 square miles (382.6 km2), of which 145.8 square miles (377.7 km2) are land and 1.9 square miles (4.8 km2) are water, according to the United States Census Bureau. Water covers 1.926% of the total area. 

  

Topography 

North Carolina's Sandhills, where Fayetteville is located, lie between the Piedmont to the northwest and the coastal plain to the southeast. The 202-mile-long (325-kilometer) Cape Fear River, which has its source in Haywood and drains into the Atlantic Ocean, forms the foundation of the city. Just northeast of the city limits, on Carver Creek, a tributary of the Cape Fear, are the 150 feet (46 m) broad and two stories tall Carver's Falls. Cross Creek begins on the west side of Fayetteville and empties into the Cape Fear River after passing through. 

  

Climate 

With mostly constant temperatures all year long, Fayetteville has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa). The winters are pleasant but can grow chilly, and there are a few days of snow each year. The humid summer months might produce sporadic thunderstorms and rain showers due to the high temperatures. The lowest temperature ever recorded in the State of North Carolina was 5 °F (21 °C) on February 13, 1899, while the highest temperature ever recorded there was 110 °F (43 °C) on August 21, 1983. During North Carolina's worst tornado outbreak, an EF3 tornado impacted Fayetteville on April 16, 2011. Sanford, Dunn, and Raleigh, as well as the surrounding communities, were also impacted. 

  

Economy 

The foundation of the county's economy is Fort Bragg. Fayetteville has one of the best retail markets in the nation thanks to Pope Field and Fort Bragg, which together contribute nearly $4.5 billion annually to the local economy. The region's center for businesses, eateries, services, accommodation, healthcare, and entertainment is Fayetteville. 

Fayetteville's unemployment rate as of March 2019 was 5.2%, which is higher than both the North Carolina average of 4% and the national average of 3.8%. 

  

Air Transportation 

Five regional carriers offer daily and seasonal passenger service to three significant airline hubs in the United States from Fayetteville Regional Airport. Further services for both passenger and general aviation operations are provided by a further regional carrier and many fixed-base operators. At the Fayetteville Regional Airport, Landmark Aviation also provides services for general aviation and passenger traffic. 

 

Public Transportation 

Ten bus lines and two shuttle routes make up the Fayetteville Area System of Transportation (FAST), which services the Spring Lake and Fayetteville areas. In the city of Fayetteville, FAST runs thirteen permanent bus routes. On weekdays, service is available from 5:45 am to 10:30 pm, with shortened hours on Saturdays and no service on Sunday. The Transfer Center, located at 147 Old Wilmington Road in Fayetteville, is where most routes start and stop. University Estates, Cross Creek Mall, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Bunce and Cliffdale Rds, and Cape Fear Valley Medical Center are among the locations of additional transfer stations.

The city of Fayetteville is found in Cumberland County, North Carolina. It will have 210,883 residents in 2023, making it the sixth-largest city in North Carolina and the 120th-largest city in the country. Fayetteville's population has grown by 1.14% from the most recent census, which showed a population of 208,501 in 2020, and is now rising at a pace of 0.38% yearly. Fayetteville has a population density of 1,426 persons per square mile, spanning more than 150 miles.
