(FOX40.COM) - - In honor of April being Sidetracked Driving Awareness Month, the Woodland Authorities Department hosted an operation that resulted in nearly 60 citations issued for what officers called hazardous moving infractions and sidetracked driving.
" In today's hectic life, it is common to lose focus while driving," Woodland Police Chief Derrek Kaff stated. "Distracted Driving Awareness Month is a vital suggestion that even a moment of negligence or a quick glance at the phone can lead to serious repercussions.
On April 5, 57 citations were released between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., according to WPD.
" Let's get off our apps and keep our eyes on the roadway, WPD stated. "Before beginning the car, silence your phone or put it in the glove box, trunk or rear seats. Anywhere you can't reach."

WPD reported that in 2023 California Statewide Public Opinion Survey, more than 74% of drivers surveyed stated that distracted driving due to the fact that of texting was their greatest security concern. In 2021, there were at least 140 individuals killed in sidetracked driving traffic crashes in California.
" If you have an important phone call, text or e-mail, or remain in a circumstance with other interruptions, such as looking up directions, pull over to a safe parking area to complete the task without putting yourself and others at risk." WPD stated. "Other interruptions can be eating, grooming, reaching for something that fell on the floor, putting on or taking off clothing, talking with travelers, or children in the back seat."
Under existing California law, chauffeurs are not permitted to hold a phone or electronic interactions gadget while operating an automobile, even when stopped at a traffic signal. This includes talking, texting or using an app. Using a handheld cellular phone while driving is punishable by a fine, and breaking the hands-free law for a 2nd time within 36 months of a previous conviction for the very same offense will lead to a point being added to a motorist's record.
Forest Police stated they will be actively searching for motorists throughout the month who remain in infraction of the state's hands-free cell phone law.
