North Little Rock teen charged after officer shot throughout battle


North Little Rock Police DepartmentOFFICER SHOT: A North Little Rock officer was shot throughout a battle for a weapon.
North Little Rock police have charged a teenager as an adult after an event Sunday afternoon left an officer with a gunshot injury to her leg..

Antwonie Sanders, 16, of North Little Rock, was jailed Sunday and has been charged with first-degree battery, fleeing and resisting arrest, according to a news release from the authorities department..

At about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, officers arrived at the 2300 block of Highway 161 "in referral to a group of suspicious individuals who were described as juveniles," the press release states.

An officer made contact with two of the individuals, one of whom was bring a semi-automatic weapon. She "made an effort to disarm the suspect when a struggle for the weapon ensued. During the battle, the officer was shot in the upper thigh," the release says.

Extra officers arrived at the scene at that moment, and one of them fired his weapon as Sanders began to leave. Sanders, who was not injured in the occurrence, was nabbed minutes later on, the release stated.

The officer who fired his weapon has been put on administrative leave as per department policy. The injured officer was taken to a regional hospital and has because been released..
