Residents in Northern New Jersey experienced another small earthquake early Thursday morning, marking the latest in a series of tremors in the region. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 2.6 quake near Gladstone, New Jersey, at approximately 5:30 a.m.
The quake's epicenter was located roughly 5 miles northeast of Gladstone, with a shallow depth of about 3 miles. While no significant damage or injuries were reported, some residents noted feeling a brief but noticeable tremor.
This follows a magnitude 4.8 earthquake that struck near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, on April 5, which was felt across multiple states. Since then, the region has experienced several smaller aftershocks.
According to seismologists, Northern New Jersey sits near multiple minor fault lines, making it more susceptible to seismic activity than many realize. While earthquakes here are typically mild, experts emphasize the importance of preparedness.
Local residents took to social media to share their experiences, with many expressing surprise at the continued activity. "It’s becoming normal to wake up to these little shakes," one user posted.
USGS scientists are monitoring the situation closely, though they stress that such low-magnitude quakes are generally harmless. However, they encourage residents to review earthquake safety protocols, especially after recent events.
