This past weekend, a group of kayakers and snorkelers in La Jolla had a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with the deep sea when they stumbled upon the rare remains of an oarfish, a creature shrouded in mystery and folklore. This fascinating find has sparked interest among scientists, leading to a significant necropsy conducted by experts at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
The dead oarfish was discovered on August 10, marking just the 20th recorded instance of this enigmatic species washing ashore in California since 1901. Measuring an impressive 12.25 feet in length and weighing 74.3 pounds, this adult male oarfish was transported to the NOAA Fisheries’ Southwest Fisheries Science Center for further examination.
While the exact reason for this oarfish's demise remains unclear, scientists speculate that injury, illness, or disorientation may have played roles. Ben Frable, an ichthyologist involved in the necropsy, noted that the coastal geography of La Jolla, with its underwater canyons, could contribute to such occurrences.
The samples obtained from this oarfish will contribute to various research avenues, including:
Additionally, researchers will analyze potential contaminants within the oarfish, such as microplastics, to better understand their impact on marine life.
The oarfish is currently undergoing preservation to join the Marine Vertebrate Collection at Scripps, one of the largest repositories of deep-sea fish specimens globally. Dahiana Arcila, a marine biologist involved in the study, emphasized the significance of this specimen for ongoing research and conservation efforts.
Given the immense public interest, the Birch Aquarium has launched a temporary exhibit showcasing the findings from the necropsy, including a life-size gyotaku art print of the oarfish created by artist Dwight Hwang. This traditional Japanese art form involves inking the fish and pressing it onto paper, allowing for a unique artistic representation of this extraordinary creature.
As we continue to explore the mysteries of the ocean, each discovery brings us closer to understanding the myriad of life forms that inhabit our planet's depths. The oarfish is not just a creature of legend; it is a key to unlocking the secrets of the deep sea!
