A dramatic collision between a sport utility vehicle and a big-rig truck resulted in a massive fuel spill and a raging fire, prompting the complete shutdown of a major Fresno highway for several hours early Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred just after 2:00 a.m. on northbound Highway 99 near the junction with Highway 41. Initial reports from the scene described a severe impact between the SUV and the semi-truck. The force of the collision ruptured the semi's fuel tanks, spilling a significant amount of diesel onto the roadway. The flammable liquid quickly ignited, engulfing both vehicles in flames.
Emergency crews, including multiple fire engine companies and hazardous materials units, responded to the scene. Firefighters faced a dual challenge: extinguishing the intense blaze and containing the environmental hazard posed by the spreading fuel. The resulting fireball and toxic smoke created a highly dangerous situation, forcing authorities to close all northbound lanes completely.
After firefighters successfully contained the fire, a complex cleanup operation began. Crews worked to offload the semi-truck's remaining cargo and absorb the spilled diesel fuel from the asphalt. The extensive damage to the road surface required assessment before it could be deemed safe for traffic.
The highway was fully reopened to motorists shortly after 7:00 a.m., but the investigation into the cause of the crash is now in its early stages. California Highway Patrol officers are working to determine the sequence of events that led to the early-morning crash. The condition of the drivers involved has not been immediately released.
