Police Report: Drunk Driver Flees Hit-and-Run Crash Scene

Athens Police Investigate Series of Incidents: From Hit-and-Run to DUI

Local law enforcement was active this week responding to a variety of calls, ranging from traffic violations to reported thefts, highlighting a busy period for community safety officials.

Hit-and-Run on Broad Street

A significant hit-and-run incident was reported on West Broad Street near Pulaski Street shortly before 11 p.m. last Friday. Authorities state that a vehicle struck a pedestrian in the crosswalk and fled the scene without stopping. The victim reported minor injuries. The investigation is ongoing as officers work to identify the responsible vehicle and driver.

Early Morning DUI Arrest

In the early hours of Saturday morning, just after 2 a.m., a traffic stop on South Lumpkin Street resulted in a Driving Under the Influence arrest. The driver was taken into custody without incident after the officer observed clear signs of impairment. The individual was transported to the county jail for processing.

Reported Theft at Local Business

A theft was reported at a downtown establishment on Saturday afternoon. According to the report, an individual allegedly left without paying for services rendered. The business owner provided a description, and the matter remains under review.

Disorderly Conduct and Trespassing

Police responded to a call regarding a disorderly individual at a commercial property on West Broad Street late Saturday night. The subject was issued a criminal trespass warning after allegedly causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the premises when asked by management.

What do you think?

  • Are penalties for hit-and-run offenses severe enough, considering the potential for serious injury to victims?

  • With DUI being a persistent issue, should cities implement stricter measures like mandatory ignition interlocks for first-time offenders?

  • How should local businesses balance security with an open atmosphere to prevent theft and disorderly conduct?

  • Does the public's perception of low-level crimes like trespassing minimize their impact on business owners and community safety?
