Green Lady Marijuana in Lynnwood was the victim of a robbery after burglars rammed a stolen truck into the building Sunday night-- causing countless dollars in damage.
Surveillance video showed the thieves attempting to steal the ATM when within.
" This is sadly, for us, foregone conclusion," stated Mike Redmond, co-owner of Green Lady Marijuana, on The Jason Rantz Show. "We've had 12 thefts, 2 drive-thru robberies, and two armed robberies. It's kind of getting typical for us."
State recommends cashless apps for cannabis stores to avoid break-in
Retailers usually can not take credit or debit cards due to the fact that marijuana is federally unlawful. This dependence on money has actually made these services a target for armed robberies.
" How much damage was done?" Rantz asked Redmond.
" It'll most likely be six figures," Redmond responded. "They took out the post holding up the structure, they drove through the HVAC system. There's electrical, plumbing-- everything was harmed. We've never put in an insurance coverage claim for all of our burglaries or drive-thrus. It's simply kind of distressing. This one was pretty huge. They didn't get anything. They can be found in and saw that the ATM was empty. We do not hold cash over night. Of course, they're criminals, so they're not that smart."
Last year, the
Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB) released a list of cashless phone apps and move services that cannabis sellers can utilize for consumer payments instead of cash. Each of these apps charges substantial costs per transaction.
According to Redmond, just 2 insurance companies are willing to insure cannabis merchants in
Washington.
" We've done lobby days and we've gotten involved as much as we can with local municipalities and, like I said, to the cops and the LCB, they've been handy as much as they can," Redmond stated in regards to connecting to elected leaders. "But it returns to the top. I suggest, we've done everything we can and it doesn't appear to get changed unless there are actual repercussions for these things."
Police union targets surging arranged retail theft of baby formula, cannabis
Washington reached a 10-year high with heists dedicated at cannabis retail stores in 2022, according to The
Seattle Times, with more than 100 reported in 2015 alone.
" For me, it appears a little bit like they do not truly care," Redmond said. And then, if we can eke out a little bit of a profit, due to the fact that we're still thought about like a degenerate illegal company, the federal government taxes us at the highest percentage, regardless of whether you make cash or not, which is 37%.
