Powerball prize reaches $1.09 billion as 3-month winless streak continues

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP)-- The Powerball jackpot climbed to an estimated $1.09 billion after nobody matched the 6 numbers drawn Monday night, continuing a three-month winless streak for the leading prize.

The numbers drawn were: 19, 24, 40, 42, 56 and the Powerball 23.

Winners of $1 million were drawn in Florida, Maryland (two), Minnesota, North Carolina and Virginia.

Nobody has actually won Powerball's jackpot since New Year's Day, a stretch of 39 drawings without anybody matching the video game's 6 numbers. If nobody wins the prize Wednesday night, the game will match its record of 41 successive illustrations on Saturday night.

The factor for the jackpot dry spell is easy: The odds of winning the leading prize are unpleasant, at 1 in 292.2 million. It's those odds that create the big jackpots that are developed to bring in attention and increase sales.

The $1.09 billion reward is for a sole winner who makes the uncommon choice to be paid over 30 years through an annuity. Almost all winners instead take the cash alternative, which for Wednesday night would be an approximated $527.3 million.

Here's where the existing Powerball prize ranks amongst the leading 10 won in the game:

  1. $2.04 billion: Nov. 7, 2022; California

  2. $1.765 billion: Oct. 11, 2023; California

  3. $1.586 billion: Jan. 13, 2016; California, Florida, Tennessee

  4. $1.08 billion: July 19, 2023; California

  5. Est. $1.09 billion: April 1, 2024

  6. $842.4 million: Jan. 1, 2024; Michigan

  7. $768.4 million: March 27, 2019; Wisconsin

  8. $758.7 million: Aug. 23, 2017; Massachusetts

  9. $754.6 million: Feb. 6, 2023; Washington

  10. $731.1 million: Jan. 20, 2021; Maryland

  11. $699.8 million: Oct. 4, 2021; California

Powerball is played in 45 states plus Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
