Time is running out to secure your REAL ID—the federally mandated identification required for domestic air travel and entry into secure federal facilities. Starting May 7, 2025, standard driver’s licenses won’t be enough. Here’s what you need to do immediately to avoid travel disruptions.
A REAL ID is a gold star-marked driver’s license or state ID that meets stricter federal security standards. Without it, you’ll need a passport or another TSA-approved alternative for boarding flights within the U.S.
If you’re cutting it close, some DMVs offer expedited processing. Alternatively, use a passport or TSA-approved ID temporarily.
Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDLs) from MI, MN, NY, VT, and WA are REAL ID-compliant—no extra steps needed.
