Lane decreases on westbound Interstate 90 into Issaquah triggered big backups in 2015, and guess what? They're back once again.

We may not be out of the rain, however paving work is increase across the state. I-90 motorists are going to begin feeling the discomfort next week as work to resurface the roadway into Issaquah.

" In overall, we're going to have 6 weeks where we have westbound I-90 decreased to one lane, and we're also going to have a number of weeks where eastbound I-90 is lowered to one lane," the Washington State Department of Transportation's (WSDOT) Tom Pearce stated.

The very first lane decreases begin at 10 a.m. Monday morning, April 10, about a mile west of the Preston exit.

These are 24/7 roadway closures. Westbound I-90 will be completely down to one lane through 6 p.m. again Wednesday next week. The exact same thing will happen from Monday to Wednesday of the following week.

When WSDOT did similar work in 2015, it produced big backups for motorists.

" People actually need to plan ahead," WSDOT's Pearce said. "We're going to be working 24 hours a day. That is going to create concerns, especially when we are working throughout the early morning commute hours. That's when we saw the biggest backups in 2015 when we were doing this work. We did see some backups throughout the day, however it really sort of reduced as soon as we surpassed the morning commute.".

The problem with this spot on I-90 exists are no great detours to get around it, and Pearce didn't advise using High Point Way. It saw huge backups in 2015 during this work.

" You're going to end up running into a substantial traffic jam on High Point Way attempting to get back onto I-90, and that simply causes more problem for the individuals who are already on I-90. People truly ought to prevent Northeast High Point method," Pearce stated. "People must actually basically simply ride it out on I-90.".

2 weeks in May are arranged for lane decreases from Sunday to Thursday, a little closer to Issaquah. The last weeks of work are still being set up.

" The pavement on these bridge decks is the initial pavement that we put down more than 40 years ago, so it's lasted a long period of time," Pearce said. "Our goal is to get in there and do a really good job with it this time, and then hopefully, it holds up for years more.".

We'll be watching Westbound I-90 carefully next week to help you get around this, but you should expect a number of mile backups, particularly in the morning.
