Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democratic congresswoman from Texas and a fierce advocate for Black Americans, has passed away at the age of 74. Her family announced her death, expressing deep gratitude for the life she shared with them.
Born in Queens, New York, on January 12, 1950, Jackson Lee was a trailblazer in many ways. She was among the first women to graduate from Yale University and served as a Houston municipal judge and city councilwoman before being elected to represent Texas’ 18th Congressional District in 1994.
During her time in Congress, Jackson Lee was known for her progressive advocacy and championing of Black Americans. She played a key role in establishing Juneteenth as a national holiday, spoke out against police brutality, and pushed for legislation to prosecute police misconduct.
Despite facing some controversies during her tenure, including ties to Enron and allegations of mishandling a sexual assault report, Jackson Lee remained committed to fighting for racial justice. Her legacy as a fierce advocate for civil rights and equality will continue to inspire generations to come.
