With a profound sense of loss, we reflect on the life and contributions of the Rev. Rt. Jack Iker, who passed away on October 5 at the age of 75. Known affectionately as the "Lion of Fort Worth," Iker's journey through faith, leadership, and controversy has left an indelible mark on his community and beyond.
Born on August 31, 1949, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Iker began his religious career as the Rector of the Church of the Redeemer in Florida. His commitment to the Episcopal faith led to his consecration as bishop coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth on April 24, 1993. Just two years later, he became the third bishop of the diocese on January 1, 1995.
Nicknamed the "Lion of Fort Worth" due to his middle name, Leo, Iker was known for his staunch traditionalist views within the Episcopal Church. He played a pivotal role in leading a faction that separated from the national body of the Episcopal Church in 2008, amid rising debates over the ordination of women and LGBTQ+ individuals.
Iker's leadership was not without its challenges. His departure from the Episcopal Church ignited a legal battle that spanned over a decade, as factions within the diocese struggled over property rights and identity. As Rev. Canon Jay Atwood noted, the conflict resembled a “civil war,” with families and friends divided over faith and community ties.
Despite the turmoil, Iker was respected by many for his unwavering commitment to what he believed was the historic faith of Christianity. Current Bishop Ryan Reed described Iker as someone who could be seen as a hero for his stances or, conversely, as a figure of disdain, depending on one’s perspective.
Toward the end of his tenure, Iker faced personal struggles, including a battle with cancer that he publicly acknowledged in 2018. Even during his illness, he continued to lead with courage and compassion, inspiring those around him.
Iker is survived by his wife, Donna, three daughters, and four grandchildren. The legacy he leaves behind is a complex tapestry of faith, leadership, and controversy that will continue to resonate within the community and the broader church.
This obituary will be updated with further arrangements for Iker’s funeral as details become available. His contributions to the church and community will not soon be forgotten.
