The New Orleans Saints have made a significant move in their quest to turn around a dismal season, opting to fire head coach Dennis Allen following a disappointing seventh straight loss. This marks the longest losing streak the franchise has encountered since the tumultuous year of 1999.
In the wake of Allen's departure, the Saints have appointed assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi as the interim head coach. This decision comes as the team seeks to regain its footing during a challenging season.
Saints owner Gayle Benson expressed her heartfelt sentiments regarding Allen's firing, stating, “Dennis has been part of our organization for many years. He is highly regarded within the NFL. This decision was tough, but necessary.” Despite the challenges faced, Benson acknowledged Allen’s loyalty and professionalism throughout his tenure.
Under Allen's leadership, which began in 2022 after his stint as the defensive coordinator from 2015 to 2021, the Saints have compiled a troubling record of 18 wins and 25 losses, with no playoff appearances. This season has been particularly plagued by injuries, affecting key players such as quarterback Derek Carr and wide receivers Rashid Shaheed and Chris Olave.
The Saints, currently sitting at 2-7 and tied for last place in the NFC South with the Carolina Panthers, have a challenging path ahead. They are preparing to face the Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns in the coming weeks, followed by a bye week after Week 12.
In a recent statement, Allen revealed his emotional burden following the team's defeat against Carolina, saying, “I’m hurting.” When queried about mid-season changes, he maintained, “I don’t believe that a coaching change is the answer. We need to improve as a team.”
Despite the disappointing season, Saints executive vice president and general manager Mickey Loomis praised Allen for his dedication and effort, stating, “This season has been marred by injuries and unexpected challenges. Dennis has fought each day for this organization.”
As the Saints prepare for the remainder of the season under Rizzi’s interim leadership, the organization hopes to regain its competitive edge and restore the fanbase's faith.
