On November 2, 2024, Max Lucado, the interim teaching pastor at Gateway Church, addressed a pivotal moment for the congregation, referring to the Saturday service as a “demarcation point” or “mile marker.” This service comes in the wake of profound upheaval within the church, as it grapples with serious allegations against its former leader, Robert Morris.
Lucado emphasized the need for transitions, stating, “There are necessary endings. There are necessary beginnings. We’re at a time like that.” This sentiment follows months of turmoil, including a significant drop in attendance, which has decreased by more than 20% since the allegations against Morris came to light.
During the service, church elder Tra Willbanks summarized the findings from Haynes and Boone LLP, the law firm engaged to investigate allegations against Morris, who founded the Southlake-based megachurch in 2000. The investigation was prompted by accusations from Cindy Clemishire, who claimed Morris sexually abused her starting when she was just 12 years old.
Willbanks indicated that there were two groups within the church who were aware of the abuse allegations prior to June 2024. Individuals from these groups have since been removed from their positions as elders or employees. “Both groups are fundamentally wrong and cannot and will not be tolerated at Gateway Church,” he stated firmly.
These changes come alongside the church's decision to revise its bylaws, aimed at enhancing accountability and governance. The church will no longer allow staff members to serve as elders, with some exceptions for future leadership roles.
Gateway Church is currently facing several lawsuits and is under a criminal investigation. Two families have previously filed lawsuits against the church, alleging incidents of abuse within its programs. Moreover, another lawsuit has emerged, with congregants claiming financial fraud regarding the church’s handling of tithes.
In response to these challenges, Willbanks announced plans for Gateway Church to join the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, emphasizing the need for transparency in financial dealings. The church has a history of audited financial statements and aims to address the allegations of mismanagement seriously.
As Gateway Church navigates this turbulent period, Willbanks expressed hope for a renewed focus on God and the church’s mission. “We must learn the mistakes of the past or we will be doomed to repeat them,” he stated, aiming to restore faith in leadership and the church community.
