Shocking Incident: Man and Child Assaulted After Arranging Meet-Up on Dating App in Brownsville

Brownsville Teen and Juvenile Arrested for Ambushing Man in Dating App Setup

Brownsville police have made arrests in connection to an incident where a man was ambushed after arranging a meeting on a dating app.

In a recent news release, authorities announced the arrest of 17-year-old Ernesto Emmanuel Jimenez and a juvenile for charges including kidnapping, assault, and robbery.

The juvenile suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday, while Jimenez was served with warrants on July 9 at the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center, where he was already being held. Two additional individuals currently incarcerated are expected to be served warrants in the coming days.

The alleged kidnapping and robbery occurred on June 29 when police responded to an aggravated robbery call on the 2200 block of Illinois Ave.

"The victim reported that he arrived at the 2200 block of South Dakota Ave. to meet someone from a dating app but was ambushed by armed males upon arrival. He was tied up, assaulted, and forced into the backseat of his own vehicle," police said in the release.

  • The suspects then transported the man to an isolated field on Illinois Ave., where he was assaulted again before being abandoned.
  • Jimenez was booked into the county jail on July 2 for charges related to organized criminal activity, theft, unlawful use of a criminal instrument, and theft of a firearm.
  • New charges against Jimenez include aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping, organized criminal activity, and unlawful restraint.

The Brownsville Police Department issued a cautionary statement urging the public to be vigilant when meeting individuals initially encountered online. They recommend informing a trusted friend or family member of meeting plans, including specifics like location, time, and the person being met.
