President Biden is making a shocking announcement just 105 days before Election Day. After a disastrous debate with former President Donald Trump on June 27, where he seemed to lose his train of thought, Biden is ending his run for a second term in office.
In a letter posted on social media, Biden stated, "I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term."
He has endorsed Vice President Harris as the nominee and urged his party to come together. The decision comes just a month before the party's convention, leaving the path to November 5 unclear.
Polls consistently showed disapproval of Biden's performance and concerns about his age. Despite his campaign team's efforts to push back against these narratives, the debate against Trump only exacerbated these worries.
Instead of showcasing his first-term record and political experience, Biden struggled to make clear points and protect his reelection platform, notably on abortion access. This performance led to calls for him to step back from the campaign.
Defiant in the face of criticism, Biden insisted on continuing his campaign, arguing that he was the best candidate to beat Trump. He embarked on a series of campaign stops, fiery speeches, and interviews to demonstrate that he had simply had a bad night at the debate.
However, setbacks, including getting COVID and facing an assassination attempt on Trump, undermined his efforts to regain momentum. Party leaders expressed concerns about his ability to win against Trump and its impact on other races.
With Biden stepping down, Democrats are now under pressure to select an alternate candidate in a short timeframe likened to the "Hunger Games." Vice President Harris is expected to be a frontrunner, but other leaders are calling for an open nomination process.
