State health department reports very first pediatric influenza death of the season


The very first death of a small for the 2023-2024 flu season appeared in the weekly report from the Arkansas Department of Health on Wednesday. The overall of flu-related deaths for the season is up to 69.

The state health department began collecting seasonal influenza data on Oct. 1, 2023. Since that time, more than 15,000 illnesses have actually been reported. Two lots break outs were reported at nursing homes.

Of the 69 overall deaths, 44 of them were individuals 65 or older. Sixteen were people in the 45-64 age variety, five were 25-44 years of ages and 3 were 18-24. The very first pediatric death was someone aged 5-17.

The flu strength level in Arkansas is still on the "very high" scale. It's been there for the last 4 weeks now, but based on patterns from previous flu seasons, the upward pattern should be about to break.
