Summer learning loss: What is it and how can parents avoid it?


BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (BNN) - - STEAM program specialist with Kern County Superintendent of Schools Justin Janssen signed up with 17 News at Sunrise to talk about summertime learning loss and how moms and dads can keep their kids finding out over the break.

Activities that will assist keep your child's brain engaged over summertime break:


  • Test yourself with puzzles
  • Use mathematics while shopping
  • Play a parlor game
  • Use complimentary online mathematics resources
  • Find your way out of an escape room
  • Create your own book or comic strip
  • Build something using directions
  • Go on a walking and draw what you see.
  • Learn to code with Scratch
  • Become a citizen scientist
  • Visit CALM and find out about animals
  • Visit the Kern County Museum
