In a significant milestone for Harlingen's education landscape, Superintendent J.A. Gonzalez has received a $10,000 pay increase following an impressive first-year evaluation. As he enters his second year in this pivotal role, his salary will rise to $310,000 effective September 1. This decision reflects not only his personal achievements but also the confidence placed in him by the school board and the community he serves.
Gonzalez’s journey to this point has been marked by a series of accomplishments that have resonated throughout the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District (CISD). In April, board members recognized his commitment and effectiveness by extending his contract for an additional year. His high evaluation scores underscore his dedication to enhancing educational standards and student welfare.
“As I begin my 30th year in education and my second with Harlingen CISD, I am filled with gratitude for the support from our board of trustees,” Gonzalez stated. “I am fully committed to serving our students, staff, and community with dedication and integrity.” This sentiment reflects his deep-rooted belief that education is a community effort, with every student treated as his own.
Gonzalez is particularly proud of the initiatives he's implemented to foster a safe and supportive learning environment. He emphasizes:
School Board President Greg Powers praised Gonzalez’s leadership, noting his track record of discipline and order while streamlining instructional programs. “Dr. Gonzalez has worked alongside administrators to create an expansion of student opportunities, which have been instrumental in the development of our students,” Powers remarked. “We look forward to the new school year with Dr. Gonzalez at the helm.”
Gonzalez’s career is a testament to his dedication to education. Having risen through the ranks from a science teacher to positions of increasing responsibility—including assistant principal and associate superintendent—his experience enriches his current role. His previous accolades, including being named Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards, reflect his commitment to excellence in education.
Born in Laredo and raised in Hebbronville, Gonzalez’s journey has been deeply intertwined with the community he now serves. He holds degrees from Texas A&M University-Kingsville and the University of Texas-Pan American, equipping him with the knowledge and skills to lead effectively.
As Gonzalez prepares for another school year, he remains focused on prioritizing student safety and quality learning environments. His vision for the future includes continued collaboration with the board, staff, and community to ensure that every child in the district has the opportunity to thrive.
