A widespread software issue caused chaos this morning, temporarily halting departing flights from major airports in Southern California, according to the FAA.
The problem stemmed from a software update glitch from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, impacting not only aviation but also causing backups at ports and affecting services worldwide.
CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz clarified that the issue was not a security breach but rather a defective update for Windows computers, which has since been fixed.
The FAA warned of intermittent ground stops and delays as airlines address technology issues, advising passengers to contact airlines for updates.
Amtrak also faced challenges, with the outage disrupting credit card transactions for its Pacific Surfliner service. Alternative payment methods like Apple Pay and Google Pay were suggested.
Microsoft is investigating the extent of the outage, affecting users' access to Microsoft 365 apps and services.
