A 15-year-old boy is in custody after a chaotic police pursuit of a stolen vehicle culminated in a multi-car collision on Interstate 15 in Barstow, authorities reported.

The incident began in the late evening when law enforcement officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle reported stolen from a local residential area. The driver refused to pull over, sparking a pursuit that proceeded onto the southbound lanes of I-15.

Pursuit Ends in Violent Collision

The chase reached high speeds before ending abruptly near the Barstow Road exit. The fleeing vehicle, driven by the teen, collided with at least two other cars that were traveling lawfully on the interstate. The impact caused significant damage to all vehicles involved.

Emergency crews responded swiftly to the scene. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported among the occupants of the other vehicles, though they were evaluated for minor complaints. The teenage driver was taken into custody without further incident.

Charges and Ongoing Investigation

The juvenile suspect now faces a series of serious allegations. While official charges are pending review, they are expected to include possession of a stolen vehicle, felony evasion of a peace officer, and assault with a deadly weapon due to the nature of the crash.

The Barstow Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team has assumed control of the case. Investigators are working to piece together the exact sequence of events, including the precise speed of the vehicles and the moments leading up to the collision. The investigation forced the temporary closure of multiple southbound lanes, causing significant traffic delays into the night.

"This was a tremendously dangerous situation that put countless innocent motorists at risk," a department spokesperson stated. "The outcome could have been far more tragic."
