Temple University is set to launch an academic course focused on the works of Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Kendrick Lamar. The class will examine his lyrical content, social commentary, and influence on modern music and culture.
The course, titled "Kendrick Lamar and the Making of Black Meaning," will explore how the rapper’s music addresses race, politics, and identity. Professors argue that Lamar’s storytelling offers a lens into contemporary societal issues.
Temple isn’t the first institution to integrate hip-hop into academia. Other universities have offered courses on artists like Jay-Z and Beyoncé, recognizing the genre’s scholarly value.
Enrollment interest has surged, with students calling the course “long overdue.” Critics, however, question whether popular music belongs in higher education.
