TUCSON, Ariz. — The stage was set for a showdown as New Mexico aimed to contain Arizona's star receiver, Tetairoa McMillan. Despite their best efforts to implement a multi-faceted defensive strategy, the Lobos quickly found themselves outmatched on the field. McMillan's explosive performance not only highlighted his talent but also showcased the potential of the Wildcats in their new Big 12 chapter.
In a dazzling display of athleticism, McMillan recorded an astonishing 304 yards receiving, setting a new school record. With four touchdown receptions from quarterback Noah Fifita, Arizona triumphed over New Mexico with a score of 61-39. This game marked coach Brent Brennan's inaugural season at the helm, and it certainly left an impression.
New Mexico's head coach, Bronco Mendenhall, expressed frustration following the loss. “We tried man, man with help, zone pressures. They did a very good job of moving him around, and we didn’t do a very good job stopping him,” he lamented. Despite various defensive tactics, including man coverage and zone pressures, the Lobos could not contain McMillan's speed and skill.
McMillan's average of 30.4 yards per catch and his record-breaking performance put him in elite company, as he matched Jacob Cowing's touchdown catch record. Meanwhile, Fifita's impressive passing game added to Arizona's remarkable total of 627 offensive yards.
While New Mexico faced challenges defensively, their offense showed promise. Quarterback Devon Dampier threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns, also adding 130 rushing yards along with two rushing touchdowns. Dampier acknowledged the difficulty of keeping pace with Arizona's high-scoring offense, stating, “To see our guys out there still trying to score a touchdown, that’s all you can ask for.”
Despite the loss, New Mexico demonstrated offensive capability, but their defensive lapses were evident as they struggled to contain Arizona's dynamic plays. With both teams facing upcoming challenges, key adjustments will be essential:
In a twist of fate, Arizona cornerback Tacario Davis was ejected in the fourth quarter due to unsportsmanlike conduct, raising questions about the enforcement of penalties in high-stakes games. The Wildcats will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to host Northern Arizona next week, while New Mexico faces a tough challenge against Auburn.
