Brian Smith received a harsh sentence from an Anchorage Superior Court Judge, Kevin Saxby, on Friday. The sentence amounted to 226 years for the murders of two Alaska Native women. Smith, convicted of killing Veronica Abouchuk and Kathleen Jo Henry, showed no reaction in court, but the emotional atmosphere was palpable.
Before the sentencing, a group of Native women dressed in red gathered outside the courthouse with signs demanding justice. Sarah Wiseman, a relative of one of the victims, emphasized the need for community support and solidarity.
Judge Saxby highlighted Smith's lack of remorse and joy in killing, calling his crimes "the stuff of nightmares." The court saw disturbing videos taken by Smith, showcasing his brutal treatment of Kathleen Henry.
