A tour bus carrying dozens of passengers careened off the freeway in Hacienda Heights early this morning, triggering a massive emergency response and raising urgent questions about driver fatigue and roadway conditions. Eyewitnesses described a scene of "sheer terror" as the bus, reportedly traveling at high speed, lost control on a sharp curve before crashing down an embankment near the 60 Freeway.
Firefighters used hydraulic tools to extract trapped passengers while paramedics set up a triage area on the freeway shoulder. "The bus was nearly vertical when we arrived," said L.A. County Fire Captain Daniel Orozco. "Miraculously, most victims were conscious and calling for help despite the violent impact."
Passenger Maria Juarez, 62, described clutching her seat as the bus went airborne: "I saw the guardrail snap like toothpicks. People were screaming prayers in Spanish and Chinese - we thought we were dead." Another survivor, college student Tyler Nguyen, credited quick-thinking passengers with breaking emergency exits before rescuers arrived.
