A construction tunnel near the historic community of Knights Ferry collapsed Wednesday afternoon, resulting in one fatality and sending another worker to the hospital with serious injuries. Emergency crews responded to the scene off of Sonora Road after reports of the structural failure came in just after 2 p.m.
First responders faced unstable ground and debris as they worked to reach the two trapped individuals. The injured worker was extracted and airlifted to a regional trauma center. The second worker was pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of the workers have not yet been released pending family notification.
Officials have cordoned off the area, citing an ongoing investigation into the cause of the collapse. "The site remains extremely dangerous, and we are asking the public to avoid the area entirely," stated a battalion chief at the scene. An investigation by state workplace safety regulators is expected to begin imminently.
Knights Ferry, a small Stanislaus County community, is known for its historic covered bridge and as a gateway to recreational areas along the Stanislaus River. Incidents of this severity are rare in the rural region. The tunnel was reportedly part of a private infrastructure project.
Local residents expressed shock at the news, with many noting the frequent passage of construction vehicles along the roads leading to the site in recent months.
