A construction tunnel near the historic community of Knights Ferry collapsed Wednesday afternoon, resulting in one fatality and sending another worker to the hospital with serious injuries. Rescue Efforts in Hazardous Conditions

First responders faced unstable ground and debris as they worked to reach the two trapped individuals. The injured worker was extracted and airlifted to a regional trauma center. The second worker was pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of the workers have not yet been released pending family notification.

Officials have cordoned off the area, citing an ongoing investigation into the cause of the collapse.
