Imagine stepping out for just a moment, only to find your car stolen—twice! That's the shocking reality for Kelly Chambers, a Pierce County Executive candidate and owner of a local home care facility. Her story sheds light on the escalating car theft crisis stalking Tacoma, and what it means for community safety.
On August 30, Kelly Chambers' supervisor was visiting a client when their Kia was stolen right from under their nose. Chambers recounted, “She comes out, the car is gone, and our office started getting calls that the car was trying to run people off the road.” This chaotic scene didn't end there; the stolen vehicle was quickly abandoned, only to be swiped by another thief before Chambers could reclaim it. It wasn’t until a few days later that the car was finally recovered and towed.
Chambers' experience with rampant car theft is not an isolated incident. Another employee from her facility had her car stolen, which was later recovered but not without significant damage. This series of unfortunate events has motivated Chambers to run for Pierce County Executive. She believes that the current political climate sends "signals from the Left to criminals that anything goes.”
As she campaigns, Chambers aims to collaborate closely with law enforcement to tackle car theft head-on, targeting the most prolific offenders responsible for the chaos. “They’re causing the most damage and making our neighborhoods unsafe,” she emphasized. But Chambers places much of the blame on Democrats in the state legislature, who she argues have passed soft-on-crime laws that embolden criminals.
Chambers is particularly worried about the rise in juvenile crime, which she believes is fueling the epidemic of stolen vehicles in Tacoma. New laws that restrict law enforcement from questioning juvenile suspects without legal representation have complicated matters further. She insists that accountability must go hand-in-hand with addressing the root causes of juvenile crime, such as drug abuse and gang involvement.
Chambers is challenging incumbent Democrat Ryan Mello for the Pierce County Executive position. Mello has been linked to the very policies that Chambers blames for the ongoing crime crisis. As the race heats up, the community waits to see if Chambers' personal experiences will translate into political action.
As Tacoma grapples with these pressing issues, the community's voice will play a crucial role in shaping the future. What are your thoughts on this evolving situation?
