In a heartfelt move that resonates deeply within the San Francisco community, the Board of Supervisors has greenlit the installation of a vibrant new tiled mosaic stairway dedicated to the memory of the late Vicha Ratanapakdee. This project, which has been approved without any permit fees, serves as a powerful homage to the 84-year-old Thai immigrant who tragically lost his life in a violent incident in January 2021.
Scheduled for its ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sunday, October 27, this new addition to San Francisco's beloved tiled stairways is located at the Burnside Steps in Glen Park. October is celebrated as SF Stairway Month, making this unveiling even more special.
The stairway isn't just a piece of public art; it signifies the community's resilience and unity. Supervisor Catherine Stefani, who introduced the measure to waive the permit fees, emphasized the stairway’s role in beautifying the neighborhood and serving as a symbol of peace—a core principle that guided Mr. Ratanapakdee’s life.
The stairway will be situated between O'Farrell Street and Terra Vista Avenue, near the City Center shopping mall. This location is intended to be a serene spot for individuals to pay their respects and engage in meaningful conversations about the societal issues surrounding violence and injustice.
In addition to the stairway, there was an honorary street renaming of Vicha Ratanapakdee Way in October 2022, further solidifying his legacy in the community. Although the street is more symbolic, it serves as an ongoing reminder of the fight for justice.
While the community celebrates this beautiful tribute, the struggle for justice in Vicha Ratanapakdee’s case continues. Despite the initial hearings held shortly after the incident, the case remains delayed with no trial date set. This ongoing situation raises pressing questions about the effectiveness of the legal system and the community's role in advocating for justice.
As we honor Vicha Ratanapakdee’s memory with this new stairway, we invite you to reflect on the deeper implications of this project. Your thoughts and opinions matter in shaping the community's dialogue around violence and justice.
