Unveiling Birmingham's Newest Icon: The Rugby Vulcan Statue!

Excitement is in the air as a brand new Vulcan statue makes its grand debut in Birmingham, sporting a vibrant scrum cap and rugby jersey. This stunning addition to the city's landscape symbolizes not just a sport, but a community coming together in celebration of its rich rugby heritage.

The Grand Unveiling

Last week, the highly anticipated 18th "Vulcans on Parade" statue was unveiled at 4525 Valleydale Road, Birmingham, Alabama 35242. Made possible through the dedication of Michael Laney, longtime President and current Treasurer of the Birmingham Vulcans Rugby Club, this statue stands as a tribute to the growing popularity of rugby in the region.

Laney proudly expressed, “I’m proud to be from Birmingham, and I love taking visitors to the Vulcan Park and Museum to show it off. I’m also proud of how the city gets behind its Birmingham Vulcans (men’s), Birmingham Steel (women’s), and youth rugby teams.”

A Symbol of Community and Support

The statue, affectionately named "With You," aims to support both the Vulcan Park and Museum and the Birmingham Rugby Club Foundation. It represents the collective spirit of the community from all eleven companies located on Valleydale Road.

Vulcan: The Rugby Player

In a unique artistic twist, the statue is depicted as a rugby player, thanks to the creative talent of Shades Valley High School art teacher, Ashley Culwell. The words "With You" resonate deeply within the rugby community, extending beyond the sport itself. Laney shared how this phrase embodies not just teamwork on the field, but also a commitment to supporting one another off the field:

  • “On the field, it means I’m here if you want to pass me the ball.”
  • “Off the field, it translates to being there for each other in times of need.”
  • “It's about building a community that supports each other through thick and thin.”

A Tribute to the Founders

The statue features the name "Krebs" and the number six on its back, honoring the six brothers—Tom, Paul, Chris, Van, Mark, and the late Eddie Krebs—who founded the Birmingham Rugby Club in 1967. This adds a personal touch, recognizing the rich history of rugby in Birmingham.

The Legacy of Vulcans on Parade

Since its inception in 2015, the community art project "Vulcans on Parade," organized by the Vulcan Park & Museum Junior Board, has placed 18 miniature replicas of Birmingham’s iconic Vulcan throughout the city and even in the United Kingdom. Cynthia Cardona, President & CEO of Vulcan Park & Museum, stated:

“Vulcans on Parade has brought the community together to celebrate Vulcan’s legacy through vibrant public art. Each statue fosters a shared appreciation for this iconic symbol.”

How to Get Involved

Community members and local organizations are encouraged to participate in the "Vulcans on Parade" project by sponsoring and hosting one of the statues. For more information on how to contribute, visit the Vulcans on Parade website.
