In an exciting initiative to bridge education and industry, students from the Building Construction Technology program at Texas State Technical College (TSTC) recently embarked on a tour of the Joeris General Contractors headquarters in San Antonio. This visit offered them a unique glimpse into the world of commercial construction, showcasing not only the company's operations but also the promising career paths available in the industry.
The visit was more than just a tour; it was a dynamic learning experience. Joeris, which has a strong presence in major Texas cities like Austin, Dallas, and Houston, welcomed a group of 22 enthusiastic students along with their instructors. During the tour, students interacted with company leaders and construction professionals, gaining invaluable insights into the construction field.
Travis Bone, a human resources director at Joeris, emphasized the importance of understanding various roles within the company. He stated, “We discussed the types of roles such as carpenters, superintendents, project managers, and our trade partners. Students learned about the carpenter roles and the pathway to progress through the ranks—from foreman to assistant superintendent and beyond.”
Students had the opportunity to witness live demonstrations of job processes, equipment, and the latest technologies employed by Joeris. This firsthand exposure allowed them to ask questions and interact directly with industry experts, enhancing their understanding of the various facets of construction.
Feedback from the students highlighted the positive impact of the tour. Hector Rosa, team lead for TSTC’s Building Construction Technology and Plumbing and Pipefitting Technology programs, remarked, “Our students were impressed by their hospitality and how they cared about their employees.”
According to onetonline.org, first-line supervisors of construction trades and extraction workers in Texas earn an average annual salary of $67,650. Moreover, the website projects a 23% growth in these positions from 2020 to 2030, indicating a robust job market for graduates.
TSTC offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Building Construction Technology and a certificate of completion in Building Construction – Craftsman at its Harlingen and Waco campuses. For further details about TSTC’s programs, visit tstc.edu.
