Recently, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was convicted of espionage in Russia and sentenced to 16 years in prison. Both Gershkovich, his employer, and the U.S. government vehemently deny all charges against him, claiming they are fabricated.
The 32-year-old journalist made a dramatic appearance in court in Yekaterinburg, with his head shaved, after the verdict was announced. The trial itself was conducted behind closed doors in Russia's highly politicized legal system.
Gershkovich's case is particularly alarming as he is the first Western journalist to be arrested on espionage charges in post-Soviet Russia. Russian authorities have accused him of gathering secret information for the U.S. without presenting any evidence to support their claims. In response, the State Department has labeled his detention as "wrongful."
