The President of the Des Moines School Board has broken the silence following the unexpected arrest of the district's superintendent by federal immigration authorities. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and prompted an emergency response from district leadership.
Dr. Ian Roberts, who was appointed to lead the district, was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) earlier this week. The arrest occurred near the district's central offices, leaving staff and board members scrambling for information.
The school board president confirmed that the district was notified of the situation shortly after it occurred. In a public statement, the president emphasized that the board's immediate priority is ensuring the stability of the district's operations and the well-being of its students and staff.
"Our focus remains on the continuity of education and the support of our school community during this challenging time," the statement read. The board has moved quickly to establish an interim leadership plan to manage day-to-day district functions without interruption.
District officials have scheduled an emergency closed-door session to discuss the legal and personnel matters surrounding the arrest. The board president assured the public that they are committed to transparency, promising to share more details as they become available and are legally permissible.
In the interim, a veteran administrator within the district has been appointed to assume the superintendent's duties. The board president stressed that this individual is highly capable and will ensure that the district's strategic goals and daily operations remain on track.
"We have a deep bench of talented educators and leaders in this district," the president noted. "Our systems are designed to withstand challenges, and we are confident in our team's ability to move forward." The board is expected to outline a more permanent plan for filling the leadership position in the coming days.
