More pieces of a broken wind turbine off the coast of Massachusetts are falling into the Atlantic Ocean, causing concern among residents and officials alike.
The CEO of Vineyard Wind attended Nantucket's Select Board meeting to apologize and answer questions about the initial break. However, he had to abruptly leave as the situation escalated, with the broken turbine blade at risk of falling into the sea imminently.
The U.S. Coast Guard issued a statement warning mariners in the area to exercise extreme caution due to a reported 300-foot piece of debris in the ocean off Nantucket.
Residents of the island expressed their shock and frustration at the turbine blade failure during the meeting, with one resident questioning how the incident occurred so quickly.
Vineyard Wind is leading the development of the first commercial wind farm in the nation, with plans to install a total of 62 turbines off the coast of Nantucket. The company celebrated the first production of power earlier this year, but the recent blade break has raised concerns about the project's safety.
Beaches to the south of Nantucket were closed for cleanup after debris from the broken blade washed ashore. Town leaders pressed the CEO about the delay in notification about the incident, demanding prompt and transparent answers.
