In a stunning display of innovation and enthusiasm, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Rocket Launchers are propelling their mission to nurture future aerospace engineers. This nonprofit organization, founded in 2015, has been making waves in the aerospace community while actively engaging with aspiring engineers in the region.
Mechanical engineering senior Ryan Lopez, who has been with the group since 2020 and recently stepped into the role of president, shared the organization’s primary objective. “Every year, our main goal is to compete at the Spaceport America Cup,” he stated. This international competition provides a platform for students to represent the Rio Grande Valley on a global scale.
Participants work collaboratively in specialized teams, tackling various aspects of rocket construction, including:
This hands-on experience enables students to apply their classroom knowledge in practical settings, fostering both individual and team learning.
Community outreach is another cornerstone of UTRGV Rocket Launchers' mission. They actively engage with local schools, teaching students the fundamentals of physics and engineering. “We visit K-12 schools to present the basics of rocket science and conduct exciting demonstrations,” Lopez explained. This outreach includes captivating presentations to groups like the Boy Scouts, where students learn about the different types of rockets the team develops.
On October 11, 2024, the UTRGV Rocket Launchers hosted a thrilling internal competition that invited the public to witness the excitement. Participants launched around 10 to 15 rockets, each designed and built from scratch by small teams of students. “These competitions are not just about flying rockets; they also teach new members how to work with software and apply it to our competition rockets,” Lopez noted.
Each rocket is equipped with a recovery system, ensuring it returns safely to the earth after flight. “We aim to have the rockets land close to the launch site, allowing us to retrieve and analyze them for performance evaluations," Lopez added.
As the nonprofit approaches its 10th anniversary, it boasts a record membership of about 90 students. Lopez expressed pride in the group's growth and success, highlighting how many members have gone on to intern or secure jobs at prestigious companies like SpaceX, Tesla, and Toyota.
