The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) has achieved an extraordinary feat since its inception in 2015, raising an impressive $284 million in funding! This remarkable achievement not only surpasses the quarter-billion mark but also showcases the power of community and philanthropy in transforming educational landscapes.
During the 2023-24 school year alone, UTRGV raised $72 million, propelling it past its initial fundraising goals ahead of schedule. This financial boost has significantly impacted various aspects of the university, enabling it to:
Since taking the helm in 2015, UTRGV President Guy Bailey has driven the mission to raise $250 million by the university’s 10th anniversary. Surpassing this goal in just nine years speaks volumes about the institution's commitment and the unwavering support from its community partners.
“Many doubted our ability to reach these types of fundraising totals, but with a strong mission and the unwavering support of our community partners, we have achieved remarkable results,” said Bailey. “This milestone highlights the critical role that philanthropy has played in our university’s growth and success.”
Among the notable donations, Robert and Janet Vackar recently contributed a substantial $20 million to UTRGV Athletics. In recognition of their generosity, H-E-B Park in Edinburg has been renamed to the Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium.
Vice President and Director of UTRGV Athletics, Chasse Conque, noted that this gift ranks among the top 40 donations made to athletic departments across the nation. Bailey emphasized that Robert Vackar’s earlier $15 million donation in 2016 was transformative and pivotal in establishing confidence in the university’s vision.
The Vackars have continued their support, contributing an additional $1 million in 2023 to aid students in the College of Liberal Arts. Their commitment reinforces the existing $2 million Janet Ogden Vackar Spirit of Philanthropy Endowed Scholarship established in 2016.
Bailey also credited the successful fundraising efforts to the UTRGV’s Office of Institutional Advancement, led by Dr. Kelly Nassour. “Reaching $284 million is a significant moment for UTRGV, reflecting the generosity and faith that our community has placed in our institution,” Nassour stated.
With substantial contributions over the years, including a $40 million donation from philanthropists MacKenzie Scott and Dan Jewett in 2021, UTRGV is poised to continue its trajectory of excellence and opportunity for its students and faculty.
