Residents of Newport News, Hampton, and Franklin will no longer qualify for free toll trips under recent changes to regional transportation policies. The decision, announced by officials this week, removes a longstanding perk that allowed locals to bypass toll fees on certain routes.
The toll waiver program, originally designed to ease financial burdens for commuters in these areas, is being discontinued due to budget constraints and shifting infrastructure priorities. Officials argue the funds previously allocated for toll subsidies are now needed for road maintenance and expansion projects.
"While we understand the inconvenience, this adjustment ensures sustainable funding for critical transportation improvements," a spokesperson stated.
Reactions have been mixed, with some residents accepting the necessity while others feel unfairly targeted.
"This feels like another hidden tax on working families," said one Hampton resident who commutes daily to Newport News.
Transportation advocates suggest carpooling or public transit as cost-saving alternatives, though options remain limited in some areas.
