In a significant development, the city of Olympia, Washington, has agreed to pay a substantial $600,000 to the family of Timothy Green, a Black man who tragically lost his life in a police shooting. This settlement not only addresses the wrongful death claim but also brings about crucial changes in the way local law enforcement operates.
Announced by lawyers on Monday, this settlement comes as a result of a wrongful death tort claim filed by Green's family. Key components of the agreement include:
Timothy Green was shot and killed by police officers on August 22, 2022, after responding to reports of a disturbance at a Starbucks. Prior to the incident, officers had previous encounters with Green and were aware of his mental health struggles, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Witnesses reported that Green exhibited erratic behavior, making alarming statements and expressing a desire to "kill everyone in the town." Despite officers knowing about his mental health issues, the situation escalated, leading to a tragic outcome. Following the incident, the family expressed their intent to file a federal civil rights lawsuit if their demands for policy changes were not addressed.
This settlement signals a shift in police culture within the Olympia Police Department. According to civil rights attorney Leslie Cushman, who represented Green's family, the agreement necessitates necessary steps in addressing police use of force and crisis intervention practices. The family hopes these changes will prevent similar tragedies in the future.
In addition to the settlement, Green's family is calling for a reopening of the criminal investigation into his death, which was previously deemed justified by the Thurston County Prosecutor's Office. They have also filed complaints against the officers involved, seeking to revoke their law enforcement certifications.
As the community grapples with this incident, the Olympia Police Department faces the challenge of rebuilding trust with residents while addressing the systemic issues within law enforcement practices.
