JACKSON, Miss. (BNN) – In a stunning development, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba has been indicted on five federal charges related to a bribery scheme in Jackson. This situation raises critical questions about the future of the mayor's office and the implications for the city itself. What does this mean for residents and the political landscape in Jackson?
Mayor Lumumba is facing serious allegations, each carrying significant penalties if found guilty. Here’s a breakdown of the charges:
According to state law, if Mayor Lumumba is convicted or pleads guilty, he will be removed from office. The city council would then appoint an acting mayor from among their ranks to fill the void temporarily.
“Whenever the mayor shall have been unable to attend to the duties of his office for a period of sixty (60) consecutive days for any of the above stated reasons…an acting mayor shall be appointed by the council,” states MS Code § 21-8-19.
However, as long as the mayor has not been convicted or resigned, he continues to hold the authority to conduct city business. Legal expert Matt Steffey noted, “He’s presumed innocent of these pending criminal charges... he’s the mayor until he’s convicted or resigns.”
Despite the legal challenges, Mayor Lumumba is still in the running for re-election in 2025. This case echoes previous incidents in Jackson's political history, notably when former Mayor Frank Melton faced similar circumstances.
Steffey pointed out, “It’s entirely possible that Mayor Lumumba runs for office, wins, and then sits for a felony trial.” This dynamic highlights the intricate relationship between politics and legal troubles in contemporary governance.
As the trial approaches, scheduled for January 6, it's essential to note that legal proceedings can take considerable time, as evidenced by the recent conviction of former Interim Hinds County Sheriff Marshand Crisler, which took over a year to resolve.
Following the indictment, Mayor Lumumba has maintained his innocence and shows no signs of halting his re-election campaign.
