El Paso's Inspirational Do-Gooder: Empowering Youth Through Adversity

El Paso's Inspirational Do-Gooder: Empowering Youth Through Adversity

El Paso Woman Inspires Youth Through Faith Amidst Health Battle

An El Paso resident dedicated to uplifting children is using her own health journey to encourage the youth while facing her own battle with cancer.

Corrine Alvarez was devastated when she received the diagnosis of tongue cancer, a moment that brought her to tears as she grappled with the news.

"There were days when I would ask, why me? It was a difficult time for me as I had to recover from surgery and deal with everything," Alvarez shared.

Despite the challenges, Alvarez refused to let the illness defeat her, stating, "If I give up and stop moving forward, this sickness will consume me."

While navigating her health journey, Alvarez remained active in the children's ministry and leaned on her faith for strength.

Having worked with children and teens for over 20 years, Alvarez's dedication to the youth earned her recognition as Big Sister of the year in 2011. During the pandemic, she led virtual bible study sessions for the youth.

Today, at 71 years old, Alvarez leads the nursery at Calvary Temple, conducts bible study on Wednesday nights, and manages meal preparations for the youth in attendance.

"The youth are our future leaders, and it's crucial for me to reach out to them and provide a safe space," Alvarez emphasized.

Despite her own health struggles, Alvarez prioritizes the children's ministry, believing her strength comes from her faith, the church, and the children.

For her unwavering commitment to inspiring the youth and her resilience, Alvarez was named this month's ABC-7's Do-Gooder, with her chosen charity receiving a $1,000 donation from the El Paso Community Foundation.

"Volunteering brings me immense joy, and I receive so much more in return. A hug or a kiss from one of these kids feels like medicine to my soul," Alvarez expressed.

Through her work with the youth, Alvarez found relief and healing, both mentally and physically, culminating in a miraculous outcome where the tumor removed showed no signs of cancer.
