In the heart of Harlingen, Texas, a remarkable story unfolds—a tale of passion, dedication, and a love for automobiles. Daniel Ledesma, an alumnus of Texas State Technical College (TSTC), has transformed his early fascination with cars into a thriving career in the automotive industry.
Daniel's journey began at the young age of eight, inspired by his father, who had studied Automotive Technology at TSTC. Growing up, Daniel watched his father work on their family's car, igniting a spark that would guide his future. He pursued this passion and graduated with a certificate in Auto Body Repair from TSTC’s Harlingen campus in 2015. A year later, he earned an additional certificate as an Auto Collision and Management Technology Generalist Specialist.
Fast forward to today, Daniel is the proud manager of Hacienda Collision Center. In his role, he oversees shop operations, provides training to technicians, and ensures they achieve their I-CAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair) certifications. “I work with a great team of repairers who are dedicated to their craft,” Daniel shares. “Since I have a passion for automobiles, it doesn’t feel like a job.”
Rick Navarro, the general manager at Hacienda Collision Center, recalls Daniel's impressive journey within the company. “Daniel started as a porter, then became an estimator, and now he’s the center’s manager. His knowledge and skills have greatly benefited our company,” Navarro remarks. Daniel’s willingness to learn and grow has made him an invaluable asset to the team.
Daniel credits much of his success to the instructors at TSTC, who provided him with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the automotive field. “I was committed to my career, and the instructors’ expertise improved my skills tremendously. I had a great experience in the program because I wanted a better life for myself,” he reflects.
According to onetonline.org, automotive body and related repairers in Texas earn an average annual salary of $48,330. The site also projects a 14% increase in job opportunities in this field from 2020 to 2030, making it an excellent time to enter the automotive industry.
TSTC offers Associate of Applied Science degrees in Auto Collision and Management Technology with specializations in refinishing and repair at its Harlingen and Waco campuses. Additionally, various certificate options are available. Registration for TSTC’s fall semester is now underway, and for more information, you can visit tstc.edu.
