During the fourth day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, former President Donald Trump took the stage to officially accept the Republican presidential nomination. In a surprising turn of events, Trump began his speech by recounting a recent shooting incident at one of his rallies that left him injured and another individual dead.
Trump emotionally shared with the audience, "As you already know, the assassin's bullet came within a quarter of an inch of taking my life. So many people have asked me what happened. 'Tell us what happened, please,' and therefore I will tell you exactly what happened, and you'll never hear it from me a second time, because it's actually too painful to tell."
For over 10 minutes, Trump described in vivid detail the attack that occurred on a "warm, beautiful day in the early evening in Butler township in the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania." Despite the severity of the incident, Trump expressed gratitude for his safety, attributing it to having "God on my side."
In a departure from his usual bombastic style, Trump adopted a more subdued and somber tone during his speech. He acknowledged that he felt fortunate to be alive and emphasized the role of faith in his survival. Trump also took a moment to offer condolences to the family of Corey Comperatore, a volunteer firefighter who lost his life in the shooting.
This public address marked Trump's first appearance since the rally incident. In the days leading up to his speech, Trump indicated that he had rewritten his nominating address to emphasize unity and healing in the wake of the traumatic event.
"As Americans, we are bound together by a single fate and a shared destiny," Trump declared. "We rise together, or we fall apart. I am running to be president for all of America, not half of America, because there is no victory in winning for half of America."
