United States of America's Sacramento County includes the city of Elk Grove. It is a part of the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is situated immediately south of the state capital of Sacramento. There were 176,124 people living in the city as of the 2020 Census. The city's population is estimated at 178,997 according to the 2021 Census. There are numerous vineyards, wineries, and wine cellars in Elk Grove. Between July 1, 2004, and July 1, 2005, Elk Grove saw the nation's fastest rate of population growth. It is currently the second-largest city in Sacramento County.
Incorporated in California for the first time in the twenty-first century was the City of Elk Grove. It has a council/manager form of administration and is a general law city. The Elk Grove Unified School District, the second largest employer in the city, is one of the biggest employers in Elk Grove.
Education
The Elk Grove Unified School District is one of the fastest-growing school districts in the country and the fifth-largest in California. Also, it frequently rates as one of the state's best educational districts. The district, which is situated in southern Sacramento County, makes about 320 square miles (830 km2), or one-third of the county. The district serviced more than 52,500 students in the 2002–03 school year and increased to 62,767 pupils in the 2016–2017 school year. 40 elementary schools, 9 middle schools, 9 high schools, and 7 alternative high schools are attended by those kids.
In the city, there are a lot of private schools as well. Cosumnes River College, a nearby community college, provides both job training and a transfer program to four-year universities across the state of California, including the CSU system and UC system. The University of California, Davis and California State University, Sacramento are also nearby. Moreover, the private, six-year Quest Seminary is located in Elk Grove. The doctor of pharmacy degree program at California Northstate University College of Pharmacy moved to Elk Grove in 2013 (near Interstate 5).
Climate
Elk Grove has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa), with hot summers and cold winters. It is located 5–10 miles south of Sacramento, the state capital. A cool Pacific Ocean breeze, commonly referred to as the "delta breeze," which travels from the San Francisco Bay via the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta helps to temper summers.
Government
Voters will choose the mayor for a two-year term starting in 2012. Before 2012, the mayor was elected by the municipal council and served a one-year term. Districts elect candidates to the remaining four city council seats for tenure of four years.
Steve Ly succeeded Gary Davis as the second directly elected mayor on November 8, 2016. He arrived in the country as a refugee from Laos with his family at the age of four following the end of the Vietnam War, making him the first ethnic Hmong mayor in the country. Following Ly's contentious term as mayor, Bobbie Singh-Allen currently holds the position after defeating Ly in the 2020 election. Sergio Robles, Rod Brewer, Kevin Spease, and Darren Suen, who represent Districts 1, 2, and 3, are the remaining council members (District 4).
Elk Grove is located in the 7th congressional district of California, which is represented by Doris Matsui.
The Cosumnes Community Services District, the biggest CSD in California, offers Elk Grove with park and recreation services as well as fire protection.
