In 1875, Henry Mayo Newhall bought the Rancho San Francisco and founded the communities of Saugus and Newhall. The growth of the city was significantly influenced by the Newhall Land and Farming Company. Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus, and Valencia were all included in the incorporation of Santa Clarita in December 1987.
