Twister survivors recount flying particles, damaged buildings

WYNNE, Ark.-- With tornadoes hitting the Midwest and the South this weekend, some survivors said they emerged from their homes to discover structures ripped apart, lorries considered like toys, shattered glass and dropped trees.

J.W. Spencer, 88, had actually never experienced a tornado previously, however when he and his better half saw on TV that a tornado was nearing their town of Wynne, Arkansas, he opened a front window and rear door in his house to ease air pressure. The couple scampered into the bathroom, where they entered into the bath tub and covered themselves with quilts and blankets for protection.

Fifteen minutes later on, the storm released its fury. Particles came whistling through the house.

" We simply rode it out," Spencer said on Saturday. "We heard things falling, loud sounds. And then it quit. It got quiet."

After it passed, the couple emerged to see their area ravaged by the twister. Many large trees were down. Homes were severely damaged. The high school's roofing system was shredded and the windows were burnt out. Spencer and his other half were not injured. The huge trees on their residential or commercial property lay sideways on the house and the yard had some small damage.

Crew members work to clean up debris at the scene where the roof of the Apollo Theatre collapsed throughout a tornado Saturday, April 1, 2023, in Belvidere, Ill.

Near a theater in Belvidere, Illinois, where a tornado eliminated one male and injured 40 concertgoers, Ross Potter got glass shards Friday in front of his building. The last time the town was ravaged to this degree from a twister was in 1967. Ambulances whirred by after the theater was hit. "They took, I can't even remember how many individuals, "Potter said. He was fortunate-- just a couple of his structure's windows were broken, mainly on the 2nd flooring.

" I simply lay down with my cats, and lay a blanket over me, and let it rumble, "he stated of the tornado that flipped over the camper van parked outdoors. When a twister struck Little Rock, Arkansas, nine firemens were in Fire Station No. 9, located in one of the most devastated areas of the city. They sheltered in the chief's workplace as the tornado harmed their structure.
